Programme:

1. Scientific meeting at the Holiday Inn, Luton South M1 (one half day – Tuesday afternoon)

Theme: Controlled Environments for Containment

Increasingly controlled environments have been used to contain plants and associated pests and diseases, preventing any environmental risk associated with studying these organisms. The advent of genetic manipulation as well as the requirement to study plants and pests together and the increasing awareness of the potential risk to the environment, have heightened the need to have secure, contained plant growth facilities. Biosecurity has been of much concern to animal and human health researchers in recent months, should it be for researchers using plants? The meeting will look at different aspects of the ‘containment’ of plants grown for research, including:

  1. The control, management and use of a ‘contained’ environment for plant research.
  2. Containment for plants, grown for genetic manipulation research. What is required?
  3. Treatment of waste from a contained environment.
  4. Plant imports, what can and what cannot you grow?

2. Business meeting at the Holiday Inn, Luton South M1 (Tuesday evening)

3. Visit to controlled environment facilities at Rothamsted Research, Harpenden (one half day – Wednesday morning)
