1. Workshop (2.5 days), Theme: “Water and its measurement in Controlled Environments”

Elements:

a) A number of lectures on water, vapour and liquid covering:

 
  • Terminology, units and measuring instruments for atmospheric water vapour - H.G. Jones (Plant Research Group, Division of Environmental and Applied Biology, University of Dundee at SCRI)

  • Generating clean and safe water vapour - R. Palamarczuk (Humidification Manager, Walter Meier (Climate UK) Ltd, Solihull)

  • Water - calibration of measuring instruments for atmospheric water vapour – local & standards laboratory - S. Bell (Thermal Measurement Team, National Physical Laboratory, Teddington)

  • Terminology, units and measuring instruments for liquid water in growth media e.g. soil, compost, agar gel; calibration of measuring instruments for liquid water in soils - P. Hallett (Scottish Crop Research Institute, Invergowrie, Dundee)

  • Understanding growth media - J-C. Michel (Institut National d’Horticulture, Angers, France)

  • Irrigation in CEs, principles and practice, efficient use of water and water as a sustainable resource - recycling - C. Atkinson (East Malling Research,  East Malling

  • The future: New techniques, new instruments, new and better environments and experiments - G. Campbell (Decagon Devices, Inc., Pullman, USA)

  • Spatial distribution of soil vapour content in soil columns and plant containers

  • Calibration of sensors in flowing gas streams and over standard salt solutions

 

2. Business meeting of UK CEUG (one evening) at University of Dundee

 

Potential participants:

Technical and research staff of Universities and public and private Research Institutes involved in supporting the growing of plants in CEs.

Number of participants:

50 maximum

Fees:

Delegates would be charged a course fee to cover costs of organising the workshop including hire of lecture theatres and laboratories, supply of teaching materials and documents, and refreshments. Delegates will be expected to pay for their travel to and from the workshop and for meals and accommodation at the workshop.
