Programme:
1. Scientific meeting (one half day – Tuesday morning) at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth
Theme: Cutting the costs: Towards energy efficient controlled environments
One of the major challenges facing the human race in the 21st century is to reduce the burden it places upon the planet. In every walk of life and work people are faced with the challenge of whether their modus operandi is sustainable in the medium and long term. The processes of plant based research requiring controlled environments facilities consume large quantities of energy and resources, both during their manufacture and use. The installation and running costs of CE facilities are escalating and CE’s are significant energy consumers in many organisations. Managers of CE facilities are particularly facing increased pressure to reduce running costs.
The aim of this meeting is to discuss ways in which CE facilities may be designed and run to reduce their costs, improve their efficiency and decrease their impact on the planet’s resources and offers the opportunity to visit the Centre for Alternative Technology.
Topics will include
-
Definitions of sustainability
-
Sustainable building design and the use of sustainable materials in construction
-
Advances in energy efficient lighting systems
-
Advances in energy efficient cooling systems

Energy efficient concepts in glass/plastic houses
