Programme:

 

1. Scientific meeting (two days at the Eden Project)

 

Theme: The Eden Project – the challenges of controlling a large scale CE

 

Elements:

a) A number of talks and discussions on the management and engineering of large scale environments for plants:

  • The control and management of the environment; engineering challenges and practical solutions.
  • The control and management of pests and disease in a large scale multi species environment.
  • Horticultural challenges in growing plants in large controlled environments.
  • Public, plants and controlled environments.

 

b) A visit to the Eden Project Biomes, ‘behind the scenes’ and ‘front of house’, and backup facilities is integral to the scientific programme. We will visit:

  • The Watering Lane Nurseries where plant collections are prepared (guided tour).
  • The control facilities, machinery and plant of the Tropical and Mediterranean Biomes (guided tours).
  • The public areas of the biomes, external exhibits and visitors centre (“self- discovery” tour).

 

c) Demonstrations of equipment from manufacturers (Plymouth).

 

2. Business meeting of UK CEUG (one evening Plymouth);

 

3. Post-conference visit:

A 2-hour visit to Cantelo Nursery in Somerset on Wednesday 7th September is offered.  Cantelo Nursery is a 4-hectare glasshouse growing sweet peppers hydroponically using fully automated CE control and incorporating a Controlled Heat and Power (CHP) unit supplying heat and CO2 to the glasshouse.  Numbers for this visit are limited to 15 people.
