Mr Richard Natt, FERA, Sand Hutton, York, YO41 1LZ, UK (e-mail; <richard.natt@fera.gsi.gov.uk>)

Programme:

1. Scientific meeting at FERA, Sand Hutton (one half day – Tuesday afternoon)

Theme: Greenhouse Technology and Practice

The CEUG’s last meeting on “The Greenhouse Environment” was held in 2002. It is our intention this year to appraise the developments in greenhouse technology and practice that have taken place in the nine years since 2002. We therefore will not revisit the subjects of that meeting unless significant developments have occurred in them.

Our invited speakers have been chosen to talk about:

  1. Advances in energy conservation in research and commercial greenhouses.
  2. New developments in sensors and sensing to take account of
    a) biology i.e. sensing the physiology of the plants as a guide to controlling the environment for optimum growth and
    b) micrometerology i.e. sensing the saturation deficit of the air rather than the relative humidity to maximise efficiency of water use.
  3. New developments in glasshouse structures including aspects of size, cladding, air tightness, screens for light pollution and energy conservation, and transparent films and plastics with new properties..
  4. New designs of structures for growing plants in bulk.

2. Business meeting at the Science Learning Centre, University of York (Tuesday evening)

3. Visit to controlled environment facilities at the Department of Biology, University of York and Stockbridge Technology Centre (one half day – Wednesday morning)

Organisers of 3:

Mr Colin Abbott, Department of Biology Area 7, University of York, Wentworth Way, Heslington, York YO10 5DD, UK (e-mail; <cca1@york.ac.uk>)
